The sport of eventing (horse trials), combines the obedience and accuracy of dressage with the daring of cross-country and the intense excitement of show jumping in a three-part test rather like an equine version of the pentathlon in athletics. Furthermore, since the horses are graded according to their level of expertise, you don’t need to visit a four-star event like Badminton to see world-class riders – they too must bring on their less experienced horses in Novice and Intermediate classes just like everyone else. In one-day events the variety of disciplines runs concurrently, making it a great spectator spectacle, particularly when the event takes place in the grounds of some of Britain’s most beautiful stately homes.
In 2008, five such one-day trials combine to form The Mitsubishi Motors Stately Homes Challenge, a series where riders of Intermediate horses can accumulate points in an attempt to win a £5000 cash prize.
Onlookers can enjoy a great day out at all of the venues, with plenty to see and do including refreshment and shopping opportunities at the trade stands. So this year why not take the family somewhere completely different?
